Montana 700i – discontinued?
As of August 2024 Garmin stopped producing the current Garmin Montana 700i outdoor GPS Unit, so the current form of the Montana 700i has been discontinued by Garmin.
An updated version of this GPS unit will be launched in November 2024, but as someone who has retailed GPS units for over a decade there is one thing I have learnt over that time. That is, Garmin is very good at missing their own launch dates.
This GPS unit was popular for both hikers/ walkers and also for trail riders, as it has the addition of city navigator, Garmin sat nav software for on road navigation.
The large screen Garmin Montana 700i also has the ability to send/ receive messages using inReach, Garmin two-way satellite communicator.
So, what is going to change when the updated Montana 700i is relaunched in November 2024?
From 28 December 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU must have a USB-C charging port, so my thoughts (which I have not had confirmed by Garmin), is that the ‘I’ version of Garmin GPS units are being classed as ‘mobile phones’ by the EU. I appreciate the UK is now outside the EU, but Garmin are not wanting to keep different models for different ‘territories’
Until the launch date of the updated version of the Garmin Montana 700i, the replacement unit for that period will be the Garmin Montana 750i.
As Garmin’s largest independent retailer in the UK, we have manged to negotiate a reduced price for the Garmin Montana 750i for this period until the Montana 700i is updated in November 2024.
Garmin Montana 750i – what is the difference?
The Garmin Montana 750i is exactly the same as the Montana 700i except it has the addition of an 8mp camera. So for the same price you are getting a better GPS unit for the same amount of money, a free upgrade!
The Garmin Montana 700 series of GPS units was launched in August 2020 so it is very new in a typical Garmin lifecycle to go through an update.
