Garmin adds Free SOS Cover to some suspended inReach plans
Garmin has quietly introduced what could be one of the biggest changes to the inReach subscription system in years.
Historically, if you suspended your inReach subscription, all satellite services stopped working, including the SOS function. Garmin's support documentation and subscription comparison pages have long stated that SOS, messaging, tracking and weather features would not function whilst a plan was suspended.
However, Garmin has now published new support information confirming that certain devices can continue to access SOS services even when their inReach subscription has been suspended.
For many outdoor users, this addresses one of the biggest criticisms of satellite communicators: owning the device but losing emergency SOS functionality whenever you stop paying for a subscription.
Updated June 2026: Includes Garmin's new suspended-plan SOS functionality where applicable.
Key Facts at a Glance
- Selected Garmin devices can now retain SOS functionality whilst suspended.
- SOS can remain available for up to 12 months.
- Messaging, tracking and weather remain unavailable during suspension.
- GPSMAP 67i, GPSMAP H1i Plus and Montana i-series are not yet compatible.
- Future compatibility is planned for selected models.
What Has Changed?
Garmin has introduced a new suspended-plan SOS feature on selected devices.
Provided your device has previously been activated on an inReach subscription and is running the latest software, SOS functionality can remain available for up to 12 months whilst the subscription is suspended.
In the event of an emergency:
- An SOS can be sent via satellite to Garmin Response.
- Garmin Response can communicate with the user.
- Garmin Response can track the device location.
- Emergency services can be coordinated and dispatched.
- Two-way communication can continue until help arrives.
According to Garmin, this SOS capability remains available for up to 12 consecutive months whilst the plan is suspended.

- inReach Mini 3
- inReach Mini 3 Plus
- inReach Messenger
- inReach Messenger Plus
- Alpha 300i
- Fenix 8 Pro
- D2 Mach 2 Pro

Which Devices Are Not Yet Compatible?
This is where things become particularly interesting for UK walkers and GPS users.
Garmin currently lists the following devices as not yet compatible with suspended-plan SOS:
- GPSMAP 67i
- GPSMAP H1i Plus
- Montana 700i
- Montana 710i
- Montana 750i
- Montana 760i

However, Garmin specifically notes that future compatibility is planned for:
This suggests Garmin intends to roll the feature out across more of its satellite-enabled product range in the future.
What Happens After 12 Months?
Garmin states that the SOS-capable suspended state can remain active for up to 12 consecutive months.
After this period, the system automatically moves the device to the Enabled plan in order to preserve SOS capability.
This prevents subscriptions from remaining suspended indefinitely whilst still providing long-term emergency coverage.
Why Is This Important?
For many occasional walkers, hikers, runners and travellers, this could make owning an inReach device far more attractive.
If you only undertake a few adventures each year, you may no longer need to maintain a full subscription simply to retain emergency SOS capability.
It is also a notable shift in Garmin's approach to satellite safety services and may reflect changing customer expectations as satellite emergency communications become increasingly common across outdoor technology.
Our Thoughts
At GPS Training we think this is a positive move from Garmin.
Many customers have told us over the years that they felt uncomfortable losing access to SOS after suspending a subscription. This update appears to address that concern whilst still encouraging users to maintain an active plan if they require messaging, tracking and other satellite features.
The key thing to understand is that compatibility currently depends on the device you own.
If you own a GPSMAP 67i, GPSMAP H1i Plus or a Montana i-series unit, suspended-plan SOS is not available yet, but Garmin has stated that future compatibility is planned for selected models.
For many users, this removes one of the biggest objections to owning an inReach device in the first place. We'll continue to monitor Garmin's rollout and update this article as additional devices gain compatibility.
As always, we recommend checking Garmin's latest support documentation before making any subscription changes, as this feature is still being introduced across the inReach range.
