Research the contract first, device second – How to choose the right Two-Way Satellite Communicator

If you spend time beyond mobile phone coverage, whether hiking the hills of the Lake District or tackling a remote overseas expedition, a two-way satellite communicator could be your most important piece of kit. These small devices allow you to send and receive messages, share your location, and trigger an SOS in an emergency, all via satellite.

But here’s the crucial tip most people overlook:
The cost of the device is only a fraction of your total spend. Over its lifetime, the subscription plan will cost far more than the hardware itself.

That’s why at GPS Training, we always say:
Research the contract first, then choose the device.

Why plan costs matter more than the device price

Different satellite messengers use different subscription models - monthly, annual, pay-as-you-go, or suspend-when-not-in-use plans.

These vary in message allowances, tracking intervals, and extra features. If you pick the wrong plan, you could pay for features you never use or end up paying extra each month for going over your message limit.

To make this easier, we created the Garmin inReach, ZOLEO & Spot – Satellite Messenger Cost Calculator - the only tool online that lets you compare the total cost of ownership based on your actual usage.

Enter your expected message volume, tracking frequency, and trip length, and see instantly which plan offers the best value.

Things to keep in mind when using the GPS Training messenger cost calculator

  1. Tracking-only option – Spot Gen4

We’ve included the Spot Gen4 in our calculator. It’s not a two-way communicator, but if you want reliable tracking at a low cost, it’s an excellent option.

  2. SOS is standard — But one-way vs two-way matters

All devices — Garmin, ZOLEO, and Spot — have an SOS button.

However, the Spot Gen4 is one-way, so you won’t get confirmation that your distress call was received or updates during the rescue.

  3. Message quotas count both send and receive

In our calculator, “text messages” means both sending and receiving. If someone replies, that counts towards your quota.

  4. Preset messages exist, but we prioritise flexibility

All these devices can send preset messages, but our calculator focuses on full two-way messaging, so you have the freedom to send exactly what you need.

  5. Not navigation devices

These two-way satellite communicators we compare are communication tools, not GPS navigation units.

The Garmin inReach Mini 2 has basic navigation, but it’s limited - see our walk-and-talk review for details. We’ll soon launch a separate calculator for GPS units with messaging capability.

  6. Know the Country Rules

Garmin inReach and ZOLEO devices use the Iridium satellite network, which offers 100% global coverage.

However, some countries require prior permission or ban the use of satellite communication devices. The current list includes:

    Taliban-controlled Afghanistan
    Crimea (Ukraine)
    Cuba
    Georgia (SMS)
    India
    Iran
    North Korea
    Myanmar
    Sudan
    Syria
    Thailand
    Vietnam
    China
    Russia

U.S. embargoes also prohibit providing satellite communications products/services in some countries. Rules can change, so check before you travel.
