Key Features of Garmin BaseCamp:

  1. Route Planning: Allows users to create and customise routes, tracks, and waypoints, which can then be uploaded to a compatible Garmin GPS device.

  2. Map Management: Users can view and manage detailed maps, including topographic maps and custom maps.

  3. Data Organisation: The software lets users organise their GPS data (e.g., tracks, routes, and waypoints) into collections for easier management.

  4. Activity Analysis: BaseCamp enables users to review recorded activities from their GPS device, providing insights like elevation profiles, speed, and distance.

  5. Sharing Capabilities: Users can share their GPS data with others by exporting or importing files, such as GPX files.

  6. 3D View: For some maps, BaseCamp offers a 3D view option to help users visualise terrain features more effectively.

While BaseCamp is a powerful tool, some users find its interface a bit dated and not very intuitive. However, it remains a valuable resource for serious GPS users, especially those planning outdoor adventures in areas with limited or no internet connectivity.

BaseCamp is an essential tool for pre-planning and post-analysis.

Basecamp is a great tool for managing and planning my hiking routes and activities, it is still my go-to. Even if I use another source to download the routes or tracks I still import to Basecamp to refine and perfect them before adding them to my GPSMAP 67. However as mentioned here it is now looking quite dated, it hasn’t been updated by Garmin for a long time and there are many rumours on the internet of Garmin lo longer supporting it and maybe even removing it. Do you know any other information from Garmin if that is the case and if they are actually planning on removing it? From what I can see there is no other software that comes close to being as good as this. The Garmin explore app is certainly not good enough to replace it. So I worry that as software updates continue, both Windows and Mac OS is being constantly updated and refreshed there may come a time where Basecamp in its current form will no longer run on these platforms.
