Behind the Scenes of Our Two-Day GPS Training Course in the South Downs

Recently, we ran one of our popular training courses in the stunning South Downs, and in our latest video, we take you behind the scenes to see exactly what goes on during the two-day training.

Have you ever wanted to confidently navigate with a GPS unit, plan your own routes, and get the most out of digital mapping?

Our Two-day GPS Training course is designed to do just that—giving you a hands-on, in-depth learning experience with expert guidance.

Day One: Learning the Fundamentals

The weekend kicked off with frosty conditions and low-lying fog, creating a beautiful atmosphere as we unloaded the van early in the morning, ready for a 9:30 AM start.

The morning session focused on:
Setting up Garmin GPS units correctly
Understanding the different pages and buttons
Naming and changing waypoints
Navigating using Goto functions

After a hands-on classroom session, we moved outdoors in the afternoon to put theory into practice. The group learned how to:
📌 Plan routes using Garmin BaseCamp software
📌 Send routes to their GPS units
📌 Navigate using a pre-planned route
📌 Use the TrackBack function to retrace steps

It was a fantastic group of seven learners, all using Garmin GPSMAP 67 series or Montana 700 devices, making it a seamless experience for both the participants and our trainers.

Day Two: Real-World Navigation in the South Downs

The second day brought clear blue skies, perfect conditions to apply all the GPS skills in a real-world setting. The morning started with a practical route-planning session in BaseCamp, where participants used grid references to create a route before heading outdoors to navigate it.

The key skills covered included:
📍 Marking waypoints and escape routes in real-time
📍 Downloading GPX files from the internet to make route planning easier
📍 Transferring routes between devices and a PC
📍 Navigating with confidence using digital maps

The group quickly saw how downloading pre-planned GPX files for long-distance walks could save time and effort, making navigation far more efficient. This was a real eye-opener for many participants, who were excited to apply this knowledge to their own outdoor adventures.
