What Is the Best Mountain Weather Forecast in the UK?

There is a particular kind of day that catches people out.

You check the forecast for Keswick. It says 4°C, cloudy, breezy, a few showers. Perfectly reasonable. You pack accordingly.

Nine hundred metres higher, on the summit of Scafell Pike, it is minus five, the wind is gusting past forty miles an hour, the wind chill is somewhere around minus seventeen, there is snow settling from six hundred metres, verglas on the rock, and you can see about fifty metres in front of you.


Both forecasts are correct. Only one of them is about the place you were going.

That gap is why mountain weather forecasts exist — and after digging through the services, the science and a good deal of hard-won opinion from people who spend their lives on the hill, we think there is a clear answer to which one is best.

Short version: MWIS is the best mountain weather forecast in the UK. The Met Office mountain forecast is the best mountain weather data. Use both — they take about ninety seconds between them.

Here's the reasoning.

First: what makes a mountain forecast different?

This is the bit most people have never had explained properly, and it matters more than which website you pick.

A standard forecast - BBC, the main Met Office site, whatever's on your phone — describes the air at one point, at valley altitude, usually in a sheltered settlement.

A mountain forecast describes a column of air. Every altitude band on the hill, plus the hazards, plus what those hazards will do to a person walking through them.

Here is what that actually buys you.

Temperature falls faster than you think

Air cools as it rises. On a dry day, roughly 1°C for every 100 metres you climb. On a damp day with cloud on the tops, the rate is gentler — around 0.5 to 0.6°C per 100 metres — because condensing water vapour releases heat as it goes.

Working out which of those applies today is precisely the judgement a mountain forecaster makes and a town forecast never does.

Put some real hills through it:

And that's before the wind gets involved.

Wind gets much stronger with height

The Met Office puts it plainly: wind at a summit can be "around two and half times stronger at the summit than at sea level." UKHillwalking reckons two to three times, and more again on exposed plateaus like the Cairngorms.

So a mild-sounding 15mph in Keswick is a 30 to 45mph wind on the tops. According to Mountaineering Scotland's wind table, that's the band where "walking will be arduous" and your energy output goes up significantly.

Then there's funnelling. Cols, bealachs and narrow ridges squeeze the wind and accelerate it — the aptly named Windy Gap between Great and Green Gable being the obvious Lakeland example. Striding Edge, Crib Goch, the Aonach Eagach and the CMD Arête are all places where the mean wind figure badly understates what you'll actually experience.

A mountain forecast gives you mean speed and gusts, at several altitudes. A town forecast gives you one number, measured 10 metres above the ground, in the valley.

Freezing level - the number that doesn't exist anywhere else

The Met Office defines it as "the level above which snow is expected to settle, or above which the ground is expected to be frozen." It's given every three hours in the mountain forecast, and as a standalone line on MWIS.

Two things worth knowing:

  • Freezing level isn't the snow line. Snow typically starts settling around 300 metres below the forecast freezing level, because falling crystals take time to melt on the way down. A freezing level of 900m can mean snow from 600m.
  • A freezing level of 600m on a 4°C valley day puts the top third of Helvellyn, Scafell Pike, Yr Wyddfa and every single Munro below freezing. That means verglas — a clear glaze of ice over rock and path — and old snow consolidated into hard névé. Neither is visible from the car park.

Cloud on the hills, and the chance of a view

"Chance of cloud-free summits" is a genuinely mountain-only metric. Nothing else forecasts it.

In the UK the cloud base is often below 1000m, and hills make their own cloud by forcing air upwards. The Ben Nevis summit observatory recorded the top in hill fog around 80% of the time from November to January, and 55% in May and June — while Fort William, 1,340 metres below, was frequently clear.

This is the one that matters most to us at GPS Training, because hill fog is a navigation problem, not a comfort problem. The Met Office is blunt about it: when low cloud reduces visibility to under 50 metres, map and compass navigation becomes essential.

Plas y Brenin put it even more sharply. In winter, they note, "a 20-metre error could mean the difference between safety and avalanche risk."

Named hazards, rated

The Met Office mountain forecast carries nine specific mountain hazards, each rated Nil, Low, Medium or High, and each applying at or above 300 metres:

  • Blizzards
  • Heavy snow
  • Storm force winds (gusts above 70mph)
  • Gale force winds (gusts above 50mph)
  • Poor visibility (often 50m or less)
  • Thunderstorms
  • Severe chill effect
  • Heavy persistent rain
  • Strong sunlight

Your weather app has an icon of a cloud.


So which forecast is best?

The winner: MWIS

The Mountain Weather Information Service has been running since 2003, when it was set up by Geoff Monk after 25 years at the Met Office. It covers ten UK upland areas — five in Scotland, five in England and Wales — 365 days a year, and it's completely free.

Here's why it wins.

1. It's written from scratch, every day, by meteorologists who climb. Not model output rendered into icons - actual forecasters. The current team includes a former Met Office forecaster of five years, an MSc in Applied Meteorology, and a qualified Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader. That last one matters more than it sounds.

MWIS themselves make the argument well:

"Models provide valuable data, but the meteorologist's ability to think about the output is key to a written forecast of quality above and beyond what an app can offer."

2. It forecasts the effect on you, not just the numbers. Alongside headings like "How windy? (On the summits)", "Cloud on the hills?", "Chance of cloud free summits?" and "How Cold? (at 750m)", MWIS has one that no other service offers: "Effect of the wind on you?" Real examples:

"Fairly small, but the early hours will be quite blustery over high tops."
"Blustery, affecting ease of walking on high terrain, sudden gusts making balance tricky."

You can read a wind speed of 35mph and not really know what that means until you've been out in it. MWIS closes that gap for you. A guiding company we came across in the research summed it up neatly:

"Without experiencing those windspeeds, it can be difficult to understand what exactly that means for you as a walker and MWIS does a brilliant job of making forecasts relatable to you, the Mountain goer."

3. It's written as a warning, deliberately. From the MWIS homepage:

"We write forecasts largely in the form of warnings; generally when there is little text, the conditions are fairly benign."

Which is a rather elegant design. A short MWIS forecast is good news.

4. The mountain community treats it as the default. The BMC specifically recommends it for people who find forecasts overwhelming, noting that it "provides descriptions of what conditions will feel like." Mountaineering Scotland calls it one of the two forecasts "it really is worth checking both" of. Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team's advice page says outright: "I personally have the MWIS mobile forecast… bookmarked on my phone."

And on forums, the pattern is hard to miss. In one long thread on UK mountain weather, four posters in a row simply answered: "MWIS", "MWIS x 2", "MWIS x 3.", "+me for MWIS and SAIS for winter."

The fair criticisms of MWIS

We're not going to pretend it's perfect, because the people who criticise it make reasonable points.

The most common complaint is that it's pessimistic:

"MWIS has to be the vaguest, most pessimistic forecasting tool out there… MWIS however tends to always be 'crap weather for most mountainous areas' 99% of the time, so you're rarely disappointed." — Pieface

The most technically specific criticism is better:

"I use the Met Office summit-specific forecast more nowadays. The MWIS forecast areas are quite large, there's no hourly granularity, and they're generally pretty pessimistic and cautious." — bikesandboots

That's fair, and it's the honest limitation. MWIS areas are big. The Lake District is one region. There's no hour-by-hour breakdown. And there is still no official MWIS app — you're using the mobile site or the PDF.

Plenty disagreed in the same threads ("I don't find mwis pessimistic"), and MWIS's warning-led style is a deliberate design choice rather than an accident. But if you want granularity, you want the other one.

The essential companion: the Met Office Mountain Forecast

This is where the detail lives, and it's excellent.

  • Ten regions including the Mourne Mountains, which MWIS doesn't cover
  • Wind direction, mean speed and gusts at Glen / 300m / 600m / 900m / 1000m
  • Temperature and "feels like" at all five bands
  • Freezing level every three hours
  • Nine named hazards, each rated Nil to High
  • Chance of cloud-free hill tops as a percentage
  • A "Meteorologist's View" — a human note on funnelling, downslope gusts and anything the tables miss
  • A Confidence statement covering the whole five-day period
  • Seven-day forecasts for individual named summits
  • Issued before 6pm, updated again before 6am
  • Free, in the free Met Office app, and downloadable as a PDF

Mountaineering Scotland's summary is the one we'd endorse:

"MWIS is good for getting a general picture of the weather over a wide region for the current day and two days ahead. The Met Office forecast allows you to drill deeper down for more precise information, getting a forecast for a specific hill… That detail is great for detailed planning, but sometimes it's harder to get the general picture which you can get from MWIS."

Two more worth knowing

Lake District Weatherline is unique in Britain. Through the winter season, Fell Top Assessors climb Helvellyn every single day and file a report with photographs and measured conditions. Helvellyn is chosen over the higher Scafell Pike because its big east-facing headwall holds winter conditions longer. That isn't a forecast — it's someone standing on the summit that morning telling you what it's like. If you're in the Lakes in winter, read it.

SAIS, the avalanche information service, covers six Scottish areas from mid-December to around mid-April. If you're heading for a Scottish Munro in winter, it isn't optional.

What about Garmin inReach weather?

If you own an inReach — a Mini 3 Plus, Messenger Plus, GPSMAP or Montana — you can pull a weather forecast down over satellite with no phone signal at all. It's a genuinely useful feature, and it's widely misunderstood in both directions.

First, a correction to something you'll read everywhere

The standard criticism online is that inReach weather "doesn't account for altitude." That was true, and it isn't any more.

Garmin moved land forecasts from Dark Sky to meteoblue around 2023. Garmin's own documentation now states that forecasts use a multi-model approach combining models and observations "specifically for the location and elevation requested." Garmin staff have confirmed the same on their forums.

So it does adjust for elevation. Worth knowing before you repeat the old line.

It's also much cheaper than it used to be

Since Garmin restructured its plans in June 2025, premium and marine weather requests count as one message, rather than costing a dollar each. On the Premium plan, weather requests are unlimited. That's a meaningful change if you last looked at this a few years ago.

(One caveat we'd flag: check whether your allowance counts both the send and the receive. If you're on a 50-message plan, that matters.)

But is it a true mountain weather forecast?

No — and altitude isn't the reason. It's a different kind of product entirely.

inReach weather wins on exactly one axis — availability — and that axis is genuinely valuable. It answers "what will the air do at this point?" MWIS answers "what will the hill do to you?"

Where it earns its keep:

  • Multi-day trips, where the forecast you read at home has expired
  • Confirming whether a front you already know about has arrived early or late
  • Quantifiable go/no-go calls — wind for an exposed ridge, temperature for a cold night
  • Deciding whether to commit to a high camp or drop into the glen
  • Anywhere with no mobile signal, which in the Scottish Highlands is most of the interior

One user's honest calibration, which we think is about right:

"Temps/winds to 6-12 hours can be done pretty DARN accurately via satellite. Storms/precip not so much."

Where it shouldn't be relied on:

  • As a replacement for reading MWIS and the Met Office before you leave the car
  • Winter decision-making — there's no freezing level field and no avalanche information
  • Anything involving cloud base or your chance of a view
  • Anything time-critical in bad weather. Garmin's manuals warn that a request needs a clear view of the sky and may take several minutes. Real-world reports include a forecast taking over half an hour during a storm, and five minutes the next clear morning. The forecast arrives slowest exactly when you need it most — which is worth knowing before you're sheltering behind a boulder waiting for it.

One more caveat for fēnix 8 Pro owners: the satellite side handles messaging, check-ins and SOS. The weather features are LTE, not satellite. You can't request a satellite forecast from the watch itself - it goes through the Messenger app on your phone.

So when, exactly, do you have to check one?

There's no official rule, and we're not going to invent one. But the Met Office draws its own line at 300 metres — that's the altitude at or above which its mountain hazards apply, and where its forecast tables start.

Here's the practical version we'd suggest:

If your route goes above 600m, or takes you onto any exposed ridge or plateau in any season, a mountain forecast isn't optional.

Between 300m and 600m, check it whenever the general forecast mentions wind, rain or low cloud. That's the band where "breezy with showers" in the valley becomes "hill fog and difficult walking" on the tops.

Some worked examples:

  • The Lake District — anything above the 600m contour. Helvellyn, Scafell Pike, Skiddaw, Great Gable. Striding Edge or Sharp Edge in any wind at all. In winter, add Weatherline's Helvellyn fell top report.
  • Eryri / Snowdonia — Yr Wyddfa, the Glyderau, the Carneddau. Crib Goch with anything above 30mph forecast: the honest answer is don't.
  • The Scottish Highlands — every Munro, every month of the year. Plus SAIS from mid-December to mid-April.
  • The Cheviots — The Cheviot at 815m and Hedgehope at 714m are high, exposed and famously featureless. Worth knowing that neither MWIS nor the Met Office has a dedicated Cheviots forecast area — MWIS's Southern Uplands is the nearest fit, and you'll be doing more interpretation than usual.
  • The North Pennines — Cross Fell at 893m, England's highest point outside the Lakes, and home to the Helm Wind, the UK's only named local wind.
  • The Peak District — Kinder Scout and Bleaklow are only in the 630s, but featureless peat plateau in hill fog is genuinely hard navigation. Both services cover it, which tells you something.

The routine that actually works

  1. The night before — read MWIS and the Met Office mountain forecast for your area. Different meteorologists, different interpretations of the same models. Where they disagree, you've learned something.
  2. Save it offline. Download both PDFs, or screenshot them. Almost nobody does this and it takes twenty seconds. Neither the Met Office app nor Windy caches a forecast once you lose signal.
  3. Check again in the morning. The Met Office reissues before 6am and MWIS amends. Overnight model runs shift things.
  4. Cross-check the wind on Windy if you're heading somewhere exposed — and use the pressure-level wind, not the surface wind. Windy carries the Met Office UKV model at 2km, the highest-resolution UK model publicly available.
  5. Carry a paper backup, with your map and compass. Cold flattens phone batteries fast — Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association say they drain "very, very quickly" in winter.
  6. Have a plan B and a turnaround time before you set off, not after.

Why this matters more than it used to

The numbers are not comfortable reading.

In 2025, Scottish Mountain Rescue recorded 798 incidents and 1,169 team callouts — an average of 3.5 a day, with at least one team out on 312 days of the year. Of 491 mountaineering incidents, the contributing factors included:

  • Lost: 60
  • Navigation error: 47
  • Overdue: 38
  • Weather-bound: 18
  • Benighted: 13

That's 107 incidents involving being lost or making a navigation error — a bigger combined total than medical incidents.

And here's the statistic that surprised us most: the environmental conditions recorded most often were fine weather (268), well ahead of rain, wind, cloud or darkness. Most incidents happen on lovely days — because people set off under-prepared because it looks fine at the car park.

In England and Wales, MREW logged 3,968 callouts in 2025, with only two days in the entire year without an incident. The BMC's read on the 2024 data pointed to "widespread reliance on mobile navigation apps that lack detail for remote mountainous areas."

Mike Park, Chief Executive of Mountain Rescue England and Wales, said it directly:

"Far too often we're seeing people in very remote and potentially dangerous locations using mapping apps better suited to towns."

And Phil Gerrard of the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association identified the exact problem this article is about:

"not understanding what the weather is going to do... that transition between what's on the valley and what's higher up"
"recognise the conditions in the valley will not be the same as they are on the tops."

The verdict

Best overall: MWIS. Free, written by mountain-specialist forecasters every day, and the only forecast that tells you what the weather will do to you rather than just what it will be. It's the one we'd check first, every time.

Best for detail: the Met Office mountain forecast. Altitude bands, gusts, freezing level, nine rated hazards, individual summit forecasts and a twice-daily update. Check it second.

Best for winter in Scotland: add SAIS. Best for winter in the Lakes: add Weatherline's Helvellyn fell top report.

Best on the hill with no signal: Garmin inReach - with the clear understanding that it's a point forecast, not a mountain forecast, and it belongs alongside the others rather than instead of them.

Realistically, MWIS and the Met Office together take about ninety seconds. That's a very small investment for the difference between a good day out and a call to mountain rescue.

Learn to use it properly

Reading a mountain forecast is one skill. Navigating safely in the conditions it describes is another - and the forecast is only useful if you can act on it when the cloud comes down and the path disappears.
