Garmin Simplifies inReach Subscription Plans (June 2025 Update)

If you own a Garmin inReach device — or are thinking of getting one — there’s great news. As of 5th June 2025, Garmin has made some major updates to their inReach subscription plans, making them simpler, more flexible, and easier on your wallet when you’re not using your device.

Whether you're a seasonal adventurer or someone who wants to keep their inReach ready for emergencies year-round, the new options are well worth knowing about.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new Garmin inReach plans, including the Enabled plan and the new suspend option.

🔁 What’s Changed?

Garmin has streamlined its inReach consumer subscription plans by removing the older Freedom Safety, Recreation, and Expedition plans. All plans are now month-to-month and require just a 30-day commitment.

The updated plans are:

  • Enabled – NEW! A low-cost, emergency-ready plan with pay-as-you-go features

  • Essential – Replaces Freedom Safety

  • Standard – Replaces Freedom Recreation

  • Premium – Replaces Freedom Expedition

No more confusion — just four clearly defined options depending on how you use your inReach.

✅ Enabled Plan: Stay Emergency-Ready at Low Cost

One of the most exciting changes is that the Enabled Plan is now available for selection immediately at activation — no need to activate a full plan first and then downgrade later.

What's included in the Enabled Plan?

  • Unlimited SOS messages via Garmin Response™

  • Your device stays ready for emergency use

  • Pay-as-you-go pricing for:

    • Messaging

    • Tracking

    • Weather forecasts

The Enabled Plan is perfect if:

  • You want your device active year-round for safety

  • You don’t need constant tracking or messaging

  • You want to avoid reactivation fees later

🔒 No activation fee if you decide to upgrade again later.

⏸️ Suspend Your Plan — Now Free and Flexible

Another huge change: suspending your inReach plan is now completely free.

As of June 2025, Garmin allows customers to suspend any inReach consumer plan (except annual contract plans) for up to 12 monthswith no reactivation fee when you return.

Why suspend?

  • Ideal if you only use your device for seasonal activities (e.g. summer hiking or winter mountaineering)

  • Avoids paying for months you don’t need

  • Your account and data (routes, messages, MapShare™ etc.) are fully preserved

Important to know:

  • During suspension, your device won’t send messages, track, or SOS

  • Suspension only begins on your next renewal date

  • After 12 months, Garmin will automatically cancel the plan unless reactivated

💡 Tip: Use the Enabled Plan if you want your inReach to always be ready for emergencies. Use Suspend if you're putting the device away for several months and don’t need it active.
