👍 Our View

This is exactly how it should have been handled from the start.

Fair play to Garmin for fixing it relatively quickly, but it’s a good reminder:

👉 Don’t rush updates when your device is working perfectly.

--- Below is the original story/ problem ---

If you’re using a Garmin GPS unit in the UK, this is important.

Garmin have recently released software updates across two of their most popular outdoor GPS ranges… and unfortunately, they’ve created a significant issue for UK users.

At GPS Training, we’ve been working on this behind the scenes and want to give you a clear, honest update.

🚨 The Problem (In Simple Terms)

Garmin released new software updates in March 2026:

- Montana 700 / 700i / 750i / 710 / 710i / 760i
Updated from 24.30 → 24.50

- GPSMAP 67 / 67i
Updated from 9.35 → 9.38

These updates were intended to fix issues (including a “copy reversed” track problem), which is all well and good…

👉 But in the UK, they’ve caused a much bigger problem.

❌ What’s Gone Wrong?

After updating, users are reporting:

- OS Maps (Topo Pro V3 1:25k, 1:50k, 1:250k) no longer display

- Preloaded TopoActive maps also disappear

- You’re left with a very basic, almost unusable map screen

In short… your premium GPS unit suddenly feels very basic.

And that’s not acceptable, especially when many users rely on Ordnance Survey mapping for safety and navigation.

⚠️ Our Advice (Right Now)

If you have NOT updated:

👉 Do NOT update your device

Avoid updating via:

- Garmin Express

- WiFi (Garmin Explore)

Honestly, this is one of those rare situations where updating makes things worse.

🔧 If You HAVE Already Updated

Montana 700 / 710 Series

At the moment:

❌ No workaround available

✅ Garmin are aware and actively working on a fix

We’ve sent Garmin detailed videos and examples, and they’ve been able to replicate the issue.

👉 Now we wait for a proper fix.

GPSMAP 67 / 67i Users (Good News)

This is where things differ…

👉 We’ve found a workaround.

It’s not perfect, but it does get your OS maps back up and running.

💡 The Workaround (GPSMAP 67 / 67i)

If you have access to our support system:

  1. Log in here: https://gpsonlinecourse.co.uk/login/

  2. Go to the Support Bot (top menu)

  3. Type:
“I have upgraded my GPSMAP 67/67i to version 9.38 and my OS maps have vanished”

  4. You’ll get:

    • Step-by-step instructions

    • A video guide showing exactly what to do

Simple, practical, and it works.

🤝 Why This Exists (And Why Support Matters)

This is exactly the sort of issue that catches people out.

Garmin release an update
→ Something breaks
→ You’re stuck mid-walk with no proper mapping

What we’ve done at GPS Training is:

- Tested the issue ourselves

- Sent evidence directly to Garmin

- Worked through possible fixes

- Created a usable workaround

👉 And that only happens because of customers who support us.

🎯 Want Access to Fixes Like This?

If you’re thinking:

“I’d have no idea how to fix that…”

You’re not alone.

That’s why we offer our GPS Support Packages, starting from just £50 per year.

👉 GPS Training Online Resource Digital Format

With access, you get:

✔️ Workarounds like this (when things go wrong)

✔️ Step-by-step video guides

✔️ Access to our Support Bot

✔️ Ongoing updates when Garmin release fixes

✔️ Real UK-based advice (not generic manuals)

In my opinion, this is where Garmin manuals fall short. They’re written globally, but UK users rely heavily on OS maps… and that’s exactly where these issues hit hardest.

This really messed me up. I have a profile set up for Hiking/Walking/ADV which uses OS maps. I use City Navigator, Topo Active and base maps in Driving profile to navigate to and from a starting destination I intend to walk/hike/ADV. I updated before heading out on an ADV ride, navigated to the start using a driving profile, then switched to my profile to use OS, and nothing. Luckily I had a version of open streetmaps to provide some detail. In the meantime there is no way to revert software version, and my VERY VERY VERY expensive full OS maps will not display.

Jon, thanks for the info. It was only 15 minutes ago I finally allowed the update to do ahead, having a couple of days before I need to use the unit again. The OS GB 1:50K map is showing OK at present, as are the Freizeitekarte maps. I have checked the version – definitely v 9.38, but will keep your notes in case anything disappears in use. Thanks for the assistance, even if it turns out I don’t need it in this instance.

Jon, thank you for the information. Our Montana 710 updated earlier this month to 24.50 and so far everything is fine. The unit is used almost entirely for geocaching and the maps are still being displayed. However, we will be wary and use the phone app in conjunction with the Montana, Great service from you, as always.
