ZOLEO Plan Changes 2026: What the New Prepare & Protect Subscriptions Mean for You

ZOLEO has torn up its old three-plan line-up and replaced it with two simple options. If you own a ZOLEO, or you're weighing one up, here's exactly what's changed and what we'd do about it.

As of August 2026, ZOLEO has restructured its satellite messaging subscriptions. The old Basic, In Touch and Unlimited plans are gone. In their place are two plans — Prepare and Protect — plus a handful of pricing tweaks that are, on the whole, good news for most users.

We've checked every figure against ZOLEO's own plans page so you don't have to. Here's the full picture.

What's changed at a glance

The two new plans

Both plans carry a 3-month minimum term and a one-time £19.99 activation fee. SOS is included on both and never counts against your message allowance — exactly as it should.

The key changes worth knowing

• Activation has halved. Down from £39.99 to £19.99 — a genuine saving if you're buying in.
• The top plan is now cheaper for unlimited messaging. Unlimited used to cost £58 a month. Protect gives you unlimited messages for £29.99. That's a big drop if you're a heavy messager.
• The entry plan trimmed its allowance. Prepare includes 50 messages rather than the old 75. If you regularly nudged the old 75-message ceiling, keep an eye on your usage — overage now kicks in sooner (though at a lower £0.50 a message).
• Pausing costs a little more. Off-season pause is now £4 a month rather than £3.50, and it's available after your first 3 months.
• Tracking is unchanged. Breadcrumb location sharing still runs through the Location Share+ add-on at £4.50/mo. Don't be caught out by the "ZOLEO Track included" wording — the live trail on a map is the add-on.

What we're seeing since the changes

On paper, then, these changes are mostly a step forward for ZOLEO owners. But a subscription never exists in isolation — and the question we keep coming back to is how ZOLEO now stacks up against Garmin inReach.

Since the new plans landed, we've had a steady stream of ZOLEO owners in touch. Some are perfectly happy. A fair few aren't — and there's been a noticeable amount of frustration online about how the changes have been handled. Several customers have contacted us directly asking about moving across to Garmin inReach.

We've spent a good while trying to pin down the scenario where ZOLEO comes out ahead of Garmin on the contract front — and, honestly, we're struggling to find it. Garmin now lets you suspend any plan for free off-season, and its low-cost Enabled (PAYG) option keeps SOS live for very little. For the way most UK walkers actually use these devices, that combination is hard to beat.

That said, this isn't us writing ZOLEO off. It's still a capable device with a genuinely simple app, and unlimited messaging at £29.99 is competitive if you send a lot of messages. If you already own one and it does everything you need, these changes don't force your hand.
