When we published our fenix 9 first look we said we would come back once we had actually used one. This is that follow-up.

Andy has had a fenix 9 Pro inReach 51mm on his wrist for five days as his everyday watch, including several days hiking and running in Scotland, running it alongside a fenix 8 so the differences could be seen rather than read off a spec sheet. Both watches were on the same Garmin TopoActive Europe 2026 mapping, so the map comparisons are like for like.

âš¡ The short version

The fenix 9 Pro is a faster fenix 8 with a much brighter screen and a proper metal case. That is not a criticism — speed and screen are the two things you actually notice on a hill, and both are meaningfully better.

What has not changed is the bit people assume improves every generation: GPS accuracy and heart rate. Both are the same, because the heart rate sensor is the same unit.

Five days in: no bugs, no glitches, and one software update straight out of the box.

The screen is the headline, and it earns it

The fenix 9 Pro 51mm has a 1.5-inch display running at 466 x 466, with peak brightness up to 3,000 nits. It is the largest screen Garmin have put on a fenix.

Worth being precise, because it is easy to get wrong: the 1.5-inch panel is a Pro exclusive. The standard fenix 9 51mm keeps the 1.4 inch, 454 x 454 display and tops out at 2,000 nits. If the bigger screen is why you are buying, you need a Pro.

On brightness, the jump depends on what you are coming from:

  • From a standard fenix 8, quoted at 1,000 nits, roughly three times the brightness.
  • From a fenix 8 Pro, quoted at 2,000 nits, around one and a half times.

Andy has been lucky with the weather and had genuinely bright sunny days out in Scotland. In those conditions the screen looked excellent, and that is where the difference shows — not sitting indoors comparing watch faces.

💡 Our take: the real gain is data fields. Andy has always run three on a screen as his maximum. On the 51mm Pro he is running four and can still read them clearly, and he wears reading glasses, so that is a proper test rather than a young pair of eyes. If you have ever squinted at a pace field in bad light, that is the upgrade.

Speed: this is where it feels like a new watch

There is increased RAM and a faster processor. Garmin quote 30 to 40 per cent faster mapping and calculations on the Pro. Numbers like that usually mean very little. In this case you can see it.

Map panning

Dragging the map on the fenix 8, you get the familiar white screen that takes a moment to fill in. On the fenix 9 the same movement renders noticeably quicker.

Andy is fair about this. It is not instant, and this is still a watch processor rather than a phone. If you flick the map hard, as a lot of review videos do, you will still outrun it. But that is not how anyone navigates in real life. At the speed you would actually use it, looking ahead to see what is coming and what is off to the side, the fenix 9 keeps up where the fenix 8 lagged.

Zooming shows the same pattern. Both take a moment to settle. The fenix 9 takes noticeably less of one.

Round-trip route calculation

This was the most striking difference, and it is the section worth watching in the video.

Andy set both watches to generate a 10-mile round trip from the same spot, started them together, and let them run. The progress bar was already moving on the fenix 9 before the fenix 8 had started. The fenix 9 had finished its first suggested route while the fenix 8 was still working. By the time the fenix 9 had completed all three courses, the fenix 8 was still calculating its third.

He noticed the same in normal use. When he went off course during the week, the watch rerouted noticeably faster than the fenix 8 would have.

💡 Our take: if you use the auto-routing features — and if you do not, they are worth learning - this is a genuine quality-of-life change rather than a benchmark curiosity. Faster rerouting when you stray off a route is the one you will feel most often.

Menus

Slightly quicker. Andy is careful here: he never found the fenix 8 laggy, though some people did. The fenix 9 feels a little more fluid moving up and down. Minor, but improvements are improvements.

The case and the buttons

The Pro models get a titanium case. That is a first for the fenix line, which has always used polymer, and it applies to every fenix 9 Pro rather than only the inReach versions.

Andy's is the titanium with the graphite black strap, more of a dark grey finish than a true black. It looks considerably smarter than a polymer case, which matters more than reviewers tend to admit on a watch you wear all day, every day.

The buttons have changed too. They look the same but there is more spring in them and a more definite feel when you press. The fenix 8 buttons always felt slightly mushy by comparison. Small thing, noticeable every time you start an activity.

On size, be aware the 51mm Pro is not smaller or lighter than a fenix 8 across the board:

  • Against the fenix 8 Pro 51mm it is slimmer, 15.8mm against 16.5mm, though you will probably not notice.
  • Against the standard fenix 8 51mm, at 14.7mm, it is actually thicker.
  • On weight it is a little heavier: 99g against 90g for the fenix 8 Pro 51mm. That is the metal case, and in our view a fair trade.

The bezel diameter is unchanged at 51 x 51mm, so coming from a 51mm fenix 8 it sits on the wrist much as you are used to.

What has not changed

Accuracy is very similar to the fenix 8. Andy has done a number of runs and hikes and noticed no improvement, though he is quick to add that he always found the fenix 8 excellent for accuracy, so there was little room to improve.

Heart rate is the same sensor as the fenix 8. Across a couple of gym strength sessions the data was spot on, which is what we would expect.

💡 Our take: if better GPS accuracy or heart rate is your reason for upgrading, that is not a reason to upgrade.

The torch

The fenix 8 gives you white LEDs and a red LED. The fenix 9 adds green, so you now have green, red and white.

The thinking is that green light is easier on the eyes at night when you are reading something — a paper map you have pulled out for extra navigation, or text in a guidebook. Andy is honest that this comes from reading around rather than his own testing, and he has not used it enough yet to say either way. There is a lot of comment online supporting it. We will test it properly and report back.

The speaker and calls

Andy's impression is that the fenix 9 speaker sounds slightly deeper and richer. He played the same music through both watches back to back so you can judge for yourself, and his own conclusion is that it is a hard one to call.

In practice it matters less than it sounds. He would not normally listen to music through the watch speaker, headphones for that, and on a phone call he does not think you would notice much difference. The microphone has been fine for calls, including calls made over the built-in LTE with no phone present, which worked well for him in the UK.

The inReach coverage question

This is the part that needs saying clearly, because it is the single thing most likely to cause disappointment, and it is not obvious from the spec sheet.

âš  Read this before you order

The satellite messaging built into the fenix 9 Pro inReach does not work everywhere.

Because Garmin call it inReach, it is easy to assume it behaves like a dedicated inReach device. It does not.

The inReach Mini 2, Mini 3 and GPSMAP 67i use the Iridium network — satellites in low earth orbit, passing overhead continuously, so as long as you have a view of the sky you can generally get a lock almost anywhere on the planet.

The fenix 9 Pro inReach uses geostationary satellites, which sit fixed above the equator. That makes coverage regional rather than global. As it stands:

  • Europe — good coverage generally.
  • Limited coverage in Sweden, Finland and Norway. Worth knowing if you head north.
  • No coverage at present in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine.
  • Rest of the world — currently the USA and Canada only, and that excludes Alaska and Hawaii.

Anywhere outside that, you are not going to be using this watch for satellite communication.

💡 Our take: Andy is keeping the fenix 9 Pro with inReach, because he uses it mainly in the UK and in European countries where coverage is fine. If he were travelling further afield he would buy a separate inReach device alongside it. That is the sensible way to think about it — the watch is not a replacement for a Mini 3 or a GPSMAP 67i if you are going somewhere genuinely remote.

Coverage may well expand. Before you buy, check the current position. There is a link to Garmin's official coverage map at the bottom of the FAQ section on each fenix 9 product page, and if you are at all unsure, ask us first — it is exactly the sort of question we would rather answer before you order than after.

Messaging itself has worked well. Andy has sent check-in messages and texts to family and friends, received fine as long as they have the Messenger app, and has used the built-in 4G messaging on the watch without a phone.

Battery

Here is the pleasant surprise. Despite a bigger screen and 3,000 nits of brightness, battery has gone up rather than down.

Like for like on the 51mm inReach models, the fenix 8 Pro was quoted at 27 days in smartwatch mode. The fenix 9 Pro is quoted at 31 days.

Five days is not long enough to make claims about real-world navigation battery, and we will report on that separately once we have put a proper multi-day route through it.

So should you upgrade?

Our honest answer has not changed much since the first look, but five days of use sharpens it.

Worth it if

You want the bigger, brighter screen and the extra data field that comes with it, you use round-trip routing or pan the map a lot, or you simply want the titanium case. These are real, daily, noticeable differences.

Probably not worth it if

You are chasing better GPS accuracy or heart rate. They are the same. And a good deal of the fenix 9 software is being back-ported to the fenix 8, so you may get much of what you want without spending anything.

Think carefully if

Satellite messaging is the reason you are buying. Check the coverage map against where you actually go before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Is the fenix 9 more accurate than the fenix 8?

No. In our testing, accuracy is very similar, and the heart rate sensor is the same unit. The fenix 8 was already very good on both counts.

Does the standard fenix 9 have the 1.5 inch screen?

No. The 1.5-inch, 466 x 466 display is on the fenix 9 Pro 51mm only. The standard fenix 9 51mm has the 1.4-inch, 454 x 454 panel and peaks at 2,000 nits rather than 3,000.

Does every fenix 9 Pro have inReach built in?

No. Satellite messaging is on the fenix 9 Pro inReach models specifically, which are separate models in the range. You do, however, get the titanium case on every Pro.

Will the fenix 9 inReach work anywhere in the world?

No. It uses geostationary satellites, giving regional rather than global coverage. Europe is generally good, with limited coverage in Sweden, Finland and Norway, and no coverage currently in a number of countries including Turkey and Ukraine. Outside Europe it is the USA and Canada only, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. For genuinely worldwide coverage you want an Iridium device such as the inReach Mini 3 or GPSMAP 67i.

Is the fenix 9 Pro lighter than the fenix 8?

No, slightly heavier: 99g against 90g for the fenix 8 Pro 51mm. That is the titanium case, and we think it is worth it.

Does the brighter screen hurt battery life?

No. Garmin quote 31 days in smartwatch mode on the fenix 9 Pro 51mm against 27 days for the equivalent fenix 8 Pro, so battery has improved despite the bigger, brighter display.

How much faster is the mapping, really?

Garmin quote 30 to 40 per cent faster mapping and calculations on the Pro. You can see it most clearly in the round-trip routing comparison in the video, where the fenix 9 finishes all three courses while the fenix 8 is still working on its third.

Faster maps, a screen you can read in Scottish sunshine, and a case that finally feels like the price tag. Just check the satellite coverage before you order.
