Suunto Vertical 2 Review - First Look

The brand-new Suunto Vertical 2 has just landed, and we’ve been quick to unbox it, strap it on, and start testing. Suunto’s Vertical series has always been the go-to for rugged, adventure-ready watches – and this new release introduces some big updates that we think many outdoor enthusiasts will love.

In this review, we’ll cover:

- The key changes from the original Suunto Vertical

- What it looks like out of the box

- How the new AMOLED screen performs

- Battery life, heart rate accuracy, and navigation features

- Our early impressions after using it in real activities

We’ve also included two videos to give you a closer look at the watch in action.

Unboxing the Suunto Vertical 2

Straight out of the box, the Vertical 2 feels familiar yet refined. Available in both steel and titanium versions, the steel Canyon edition we unboxed features a bold orange strap and Suunto’s trademark rugged build.

Notable design updates include:

- AMOLED screen – a huge step up in brightness and clarity over the old memory-in-pixel screen.

- Slightly larger display – 1.5" compared to 1.4", with sharper 466x466 resolution.

- Improved heart rate sensor – the same next-generation sensor as the Suunto Race 2, which has proven accurate in testing.

- New charging cradle – stronger magnets and USB-C output for more secure, faster charging.

- Built-in LED torch – a practical new feature for those unexpected moments outdoors.

- Faster operating system – noticeably smoother when navigating menus.

Battery performance is particularly impressive for an AMOLED watch:

- Up to 65 hours (dual-band GNSS, colour maps, tilt-to-wake screen).

- 75 hours in single-band mode.

- Around 20 days in smartwatch mode.

That’s still competitive with the solar edition of the original Vertical, though the lack of solar charging on the AMOLED model does mean slightly reduced maximum figures.

First Look: Suunto Vertical 2 in Action

Once paired with the Suunto app and loaded with maps, the watch really comes to life. The AMOLED screen is vibrant, clear in all conditions, and makes navigating menus and maps a pleasure.

Screen and Controls

- Smooth, fast interface thanks to upgraded RAM and software.

- Full touchscreen navigation alongside reliable button control.

- Multiple customisable watch faces, from clean analog to adventure-themed digital displays.

Sports and Health Features

With over 115 activity profiles preloaded (plus the ability to create custom ones), the Vertical 2 is versatile enough for hiking, trail running, cycling, swimming, gym sessions, and more.

Key features we’ve tested so far include:

- Accurate new heart rate sensor – performed very close to a chest strap during high-intensity gym training.

- Sleep tracking – detailed breakdown including sleep stages, average heart rate, and blood oxygen readings.

- Training recovery metrics – clear feedback on effort and rest balance.

- Compass & altimeter – reliable and responsive, with detailed barometric pressure data.

Mapping and Navigation

Suunto has built its reputation on navigation, and the Vertical 2 continues that tradition.

- Full-colour offline maps – easy to pan and zoom, with contour lines and clear route displays.

- Arrow guidance on routes – showing direction of travel at a glance.

- Elevation profiles – colour-coded to indicate gradient (red for steep, green for flat/downhill).

Grid references – can display Ordnance Survey references and save waypoints instantly.

It’s intuitive, quick, and doesn’t overload the display with clutter – making it an excellent companion for walkers, trail runners, and multi-day adventurers.

Early Verdict

The Suunto Vertical 2 is a big leap forward, especially with its:

- Stunning AMOLED screen

- Improved heart rate accuracy

- Strong battery life for an AMOLED device

- Solid mapping and navigation features

- New charging cradle and built-in LED torch

It keeps the rugged, adventure-first DNA of the Vertical series, but with modern refinements that make it more enjoyable to use day-to-day. For anyone who values durability, accurate navigation, and clear mapping, the Vertical 2 is a very strong contender in the outdoor GPS watch space.
