Kit List - Map & Compass and GPS in the Hills Courses

A day on the hills can involve changing weather conditions and varying terrain, even in summer. To help you get the most from your day and stay comfortable, please come prepared.

A quick check of the local weather forecast before leaving home is always worthwhile.

Unsure if your kit is suitable?
Please contact us before the course and we will happily advise.

Essential Clothing

Footwear

  • Walking boots or sturdy walking shoes are suitable for uneven ground
  • Comfortable walking socks (avoid wearing brand-new socks on the day)

Clothing

  • Walking trousers or outdoor clothing suitable for the conditions
  • Please do not wear denim jeans as they become heavy and uncomfortable when wet
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof overtrousers
  • Extra warm layers, including at least one spare dry layer (several thinner layers work better than one thick layer)
  • Hat and gloves for colder conditions
  • Sun hat for warm weather
  • Sunglasses (particularly useful in bright or snowy conditions)

Top Tip:
Avoid cotton clothing where possible, as it can stay damp and make you feel cold. Technical, wool or synthetic outdoor clothing generally performs much better outdoors.

Essentials to Carry

Food and Drink

  • Water or drinks to keep you hydrated
  • Packed lunch (for full-day courses)
  • Snacks for energy during the day

Safety and Personal Items

  • Personal first aid kit (including blister plasters)
  • Any personal medication you may require during the day
(We recommend carrying this clearly labelled and easily accessible in the top pocket of your rucksack)
  • Fully charged mobile phone
  • Small power bank (recommended for longer days)
  • Sun cream/sun block
  • Survival bag or emergency shelter (small, lightweight and highly recommended in hill environments)
  • Head torch

Rucksack

  • A small day rucksack to carry your kit

Please note that many rucksacks are not waterproof, so we recommend using dry bags or simple plastic bags inside your rucksack to keep items dry.

For GPS Courses Only

  • Please bring your GPS unit and charging cable (if applicable)
  • If using a GPS watch, please ensure it is fully charged
  • If you already have route files, questions or areas you would like help with, please bring them along

Before We Set Off

Our instructor may carry out a quick kit check before heading onto the hills to ensure everyone is comfortable and equipped for the conditions.

If somebody arrives without suitable clothing or equipment for the conditions, we may be unable to take them onto the course for safety reasons. Unfortunately, refunds cannot be offered in these circumstances.

Bringing Your Dog

Dogs are not allowed on our courses. Please accept our apologies.

Top Tip from GPS Training

The weather can change quickly. Even if the forecast looks warm and dry, always pack a waterproof and one extra layer.

It is far easier to carry it and not need it than wish you had brought it.
