- GPS Training review on the Garmin GPSMAP 66s - the expert's view -

The Garmin GPSMAP 66s is the second best-selling GPS unit and rightly so, it is currently one of the best top-end buttoned GPS units in our recent video review.

If you are a four-season walker and wear gloves in winter a buttoned GPS unit is a must and the durability and good battery life you get from the Garmin GPSMAP 66s make it ideal.

Being one of the 'new generation' GPS units it also works alongside the Garmin explore app meaning you can download routes directly from the internet and transfer these directly onto the Garmin GPSMAP 66s without the need of a computer.

The three-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing whether you're moving or not.

See Where You Are Headed

Stay Tuned to Conditions

You’ll always stay informed of weather conditions when you pair your GPSMAP 66 series device via Bluetooth to a compatible smartphone. Receive Active Weather updates for real-time forecast information, including predictive maps for temperature, wind, precipitation and clouds. It also provides live weather radar so you’re aware of inclement weather that can affect your outdoor adventures.

GPSMAP 66s make it easier than ever to enjoy your geocaching experience. Set it to automatically update with all the latest caches from Geocaching Live, including cache descriptions, logs and hints. With a Wi-Fi connection or through Garmin Connect on a compatible smartphone, you'll avoid manually entering coordinates or printing out cache details on paper — and each find will automatically upload to your Geocaching.com profile.

– Garmin GPSMAP 66s with Birdseye PLUS Voucher (25,000 sq km of 1:25k maps)

You activate the map credit against your Garmin account and then once you have this map credit in place you have one year to download your 25,000 sq km of 1:25k maps.

25,000 sq km is larger than the size of Wales and the area you choose can be split (i.e. you can choose areas from all over Great Britain).

Don’t worry, if you buy the unit from GPS Training you will get a step by step guide of how to download this mapping.

– Garmin GPSMAP 66s with TOPO Great Britain Pro 1:50k (2021 edition - most recent)

This is full GB at 1:50k mapping on a map card, which sits in the back of the GPS unit.

The TOPO PRO means that it is the latest map card from Garmin, giving you off road turn by turn routing within the National Parks, this means you can select a location many miles ahead and the GPS will route you via the footpaths to get to that location (like a car sat nav does).

Outside National Parks the GPS will navigate you in a straight line from waypoint to waypoint.

Don’t worry, here at the GPS Training we set the unit up for you so you can easily use these features and we even include a quick start guide so you can quickly get up and running with your GPS unit.
