Winner Spine Race Interview with Paul Grundy – Montane Spine Race Champion

In our latest GPS Training Podcast, we had the privilege of interviewing Paul Grundy, the winner of the Montane Spine Challenger North Ultra. This exclusive interview offers an in-depth look at his experience of tackling one of the most gruelling endurance races in the UK, known for its harsh winter conditions and challenging navigation requirements.

An Unforgettable Win at the Winter Spine Race

Paul Grundy emerged victorious at the Winter Spine Challenger North, battling extreme weather conditions including snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. Reflecting on his win, Paul shared how the physical and mental fatigue took time to recover from but emphasised the satisfaction of completing such a demanding race.

His journey on the Pennine Way began at the age of 14 when he first walked the trail with his father. This nostalgic connection inspired him to conquer the route in the Spine Challenger North, marking a personal achievement intertwined with sentimental value.

Race Strategy and Navigation on the Spine Race

Paul revealed his meticulous approach to race strategy, including navigation for the Spine Race. He relied heavily on two key GPS devices:

  • TwoNav Roc – Purchased from GPS Training, this GPS device provided detailed OS maps and played a crucial role in accurate navigation during the race. Paul praised its reliability, particularly in remote areas with limited visibility.

  • Suunto Vertical GPS Watch – As a newly stocked product at GPS Training, Paul’s feedback was invaluable. He found the Suunto Vertical particularly useful for its long battery life and seamless route tracking. This watch became an essential companion, allowing him to stay on course throughout the race.

Paul’s Spine Race kit list also included essential items for winter navigation, and he highlighted the importance of thorough preparation and familiarity with gear.

Overcoming Challenges and Mental Resilience

The Montane Spine Race is notorious for its brutal terrain and unforgiving weather. Paul faced several challenges, including a 38-minute penalty for missing a diversion at Cauldron Snout. Despite this setback, he maintained focus and navigated treacherous snow-covered sections, which required both physical strength and mental resilience.

One of the most dramatic moments occurred with 15 miles to go, when Paul slipped on ice and severely injured his ankle. Displaying incredible determination, he hobbled to the finish line, securing his victory. This perseverance not only showcased his athleticism but also highlighted the mental toughness required for such endurance events.

Looking Ahead – Full Winter Spine Race

After his triumphant win, Paul has set his sights on the full Winter Spine Race next year. Motivated by his victory and the invaluable experience gained, he is ready to take on the full 268-mile challenge. His story is one of perseverance, strategic planning, and sheer willpower.
